Why Interview Preparation Makes the Difference
Even the most qualified candidates can stumble in interviews when caught off guard. Preparation doesn't just reduce nerves — it helps you give structured, compelling answers that demonstrate your value clearly. The good news? Most interviews draw from the same pool of core questions.
Here are 15 common interview questions, what interviewers are really asking, and how to answer them well.
Opening Questions
1. "Tell me about yourself."
What they want: A professional summary, not your life story. Keep it to 2 minutes covering your background, current role, and why you're here.
Tip: Use the Present–Past–Future structure: where you are now, how you got there, and what you're looking for next.
2. "Why do you want to work here?"
What they want: Evidence that you've researched the company and have genuine motivation beyond "it seemed like a good job."
Tip: Reference specific things about the company — their mission, recent projects, culture, or growth — and connect them to your own goals.
3. "Why are you leaving your current job?"
What they want: Reassurance that you're moving toward something positive, not fleeing a mess. Always stay professional and avoid criticising former employers.
Behavioural Questions (Use the STAR Method)
For behavioural questions, use the STAR method: Situation, Task, Action, Result. This gives your answer clear structure and evidence.
4. "Tell me about a time you handled a difficult situation at work."
5. "Describe a time you worked under pressure to meet a deadline."
6. "Give an example of when you showed leadership."
7. "Tell me about a time you disagreed with a colleague or manager."
For all of the above, prepare 3–4 strong examples from your experience that can be adapted to different behavioural prompts.
Skills & Competency Questions
8. "What are your greatest strengths?"
Tip: Choose 2–3 strengths that are genuinely relevant to the role and back each one up with a brief example.
9. "What is your greatest weakness?"
Tip: Choose a real weakness, but one you've actively been working to improve. Show self-awareness and growth mindset.
10. "How do you prioritise your workload?"
Tip: Describe a real system you use — whether it's task management tools, urgency/importance matrices, or regular planning habits.
Role-Specific Questions
11. "Where do you see yourself in 5 years?"
Tip: Align your answer with growth opportunities within the company. Show ambition but also commitment to the role you're applying for.
12. "What do you know about our industry/competitors?"
Tip: Research the company's sector, key competitors, and any recent news or trends before the interview.
Closing Questions
13. "What salary are you expecting?"
Tip: Research market rates before the interview. Give a reasoned range rather than a single number, and leave room to negotiate.
14. "Do you have any questions for us?"
Tip: Always prepare 3–5 thoughtful questions. Ask about the team, the role's success metrics, or growth opportunities — never about leave entitlements or perks in a first interview.
15. "Why should we hire you?"
Tip: Summarise the 3 most compelling reasons: your relevant experience, a specific skill that sets you apart, and your genuine enthusiasm for the role.
